Different Class, by Joanne Harris (of ‘Chocolat’ fame) is dark, creepy and compelling. It’s not one to pick up if you’re feeling a bit low because it has quite a drag to it, but the main character is engaging and Joanne Harris’ high quality writing style kept pulling me onwards. Roy Straitley is as straight as his name sounds. At 60, he has given his life to his vocation as the Classics Master at an exclusive grammar school in Yorkshire.
His battles with the new Head at the school at first appear to be circling around resistance to adopting new technology and acceptance that classics is no longer central to the school’s curriculum. However, the story gradually embroils him in overlooked murders, sexual abuse and homophobia which had been under his nose for decades.
